Valentine's Day, or St. Valentine's Day (February 14), is the holiday of love and affection. People express their feelings on this day with gifts, flowers, chocolates or romantic gestures.

How about getting a little closer to Valentine's Day ? 

One of the reasons why it is difficult to determine the true identity of St. Valentine is that Valentine or Valentinus was a popular Roman name. It comes from the Latin word valens, which means "healthy" and "strong".

Why February 14?
St. Valentine was a priest whose main "crime" was marrying young couples despite the emperor's ban. Claudius of Gaul's decree was aimed at strengthening the Roman army, increasingly weakened by incursions of semi-barbarian Germanic tribes. He noticed that unmarried recruits fought more bravely, so he only allowed the marriages of men unsuited to the military trade or military mercenaries.

Since St. Valentine did not respect the prohibition, the emperor ordered the torture and later the beheading of St. Valentine on the very 14th of February 296. The feast of St. Valentine became official in 1537, following the proclamation of King Henry VII.
