How about finding out more over spring break?

In many regions, carnivals are held during spring break, with fun, music and colourful masks. Carnival has its roots in ancient times, when people believed that masks could ward off evil and bring good luck and abundance.

Carnival (from Tal. carnevale < *carnelevale < carne levare - "to take away the flesh") is a folk dance entertainment characterized by the use of masks and various costumes. Traditionally held in the run-up to Lent as a farewell to meat and celebration, its length can vary from region to region.

The Slovak term carnival corresponds in content to carnival. Carnival culture spread through the nobility and bourgeoisie from Italian and German backgrounds. It was a manifestation of popular laughter culture and had an extra-ecclesiastical and extra-religious character, rather parodying the church and religion (donkey festival or fool's holiday). It developed in an urban environment in public spaces (streets, market places, etc.).

After that, there is a 40-day fasting period.

Carnival celebrations differed regionally, although there were common features. For example, a roast was cooked to which the whole village was invited. The young men first went around the village for a week before the party, inviting the girls as well as the elders. During this round they did not forget to collect eggs and bacon. The roast was usually prepared by the richtárka, and then the entertainment began, which included roasted doughnuts, caramel, strudel, goosefoot and other local specialties.
